Invocation 2008
By Rev. Rod Sinclair

O God of all Life, we gather in this place, eager to
find the Joy that is present in the sport of baseball,
expecting to find the excitement, the sheer fun of playing the game.

And if this is true, if that kind of truth resides here, it may be
that this place is a holy place, in the way that all life is holy.

We ask you then, good Lord, to help us understand the mystery of this game,
help us to discover the honor that resides at the pitcher's mound
and behind the plate.
Help us come to know the respect for the other that is embedded in First Base;
help us know that a potential for lasting friendships resides at Second Base;
help us find that concern for others is inherent to Third Base;
and that at Home can be found the very best of our personal ideals:
    - honesty
    - justice
    - and a response to human need,
        where we love our neighbor as ourself.

And in the Outfield, that vast expanse of inter-stellar Space,
the Spirit calls us in our loneliness, calls us to listen to Your Holy Word
in the Crack of the Bat,
invites us to expand our Personal Mission in life,
that we may become examples of excellence,
ball players that make our coaches proud,
ball players that make our parents proud.

Good Lord, you have given us many Gifts,
and among them is the gift of Baseball.
May we show our gratitude by always honoring the Sport
and honoring all who are here today.

Amen
